Paradis Latin and flea markets: treat yourself to the varied charms of Paris

Summer calls for a change of scenery, so why not treat yourself to a break in Paris? There’s so much to do here. This time we would like to bring the Paradis Latin and its show, a legendary Parisian cabaret, to your attention, as well as clue you in about the wealth of wonderful and unique items awaiting discovery when you explore the best flea markets in the capital...

The Paradis Latin, the oldest Parisian cabaret

The original Théâtre Latin, built in 1803, burned down but was rebuilt by none other than Gustave Eiffel himself and re-opened in 1889 as the Paradis Latin. From the beginning its stage was trodden by the biggest stars, such as the Belle Epoque cabaret singer Yvette Guilbert, and a notable clientele, including the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The latter, a regular, was heavily involved in the Paris cabaret scene, drawing dancers and designing the posters for famous theatres such as the Moulin Rouge and the Chat Noir.

However, the focus of fashionable Parisian nightlife had switched to the Montmartre district by the turn of the century and the Paradis Latin was forced to close, only to be rediscovered in 1973 by Jean Kriegel, who decided to restore this vital piece of Parisian heritage. Reborn, it swiftly became one of the most popular nightspots in the city.

The Hotel Best Western Quartier Latin recommends that you sample the uniquely Parisian experience provided by this legendary venue, where you can see the French cancan performed by some of the capital’s most talented dancers. Various packages are available for an evening in this magical place, including dinner and a show from €130 per person.

Flea markets of the 11th: small Parisian treasures

Unable to resist the allure of antique dealers and second hand shops? Then you’ll love poking around the flea markets of the 11th arrondissement, where you can take a journey into the Parisian past. Many such caves of Ali Baba are clustered around the Rue du Marché Popincourt and are a vintage collectibles lovers dream. Whether you prefer carefully arranged antiques emporia or dusty and chaotic old second-hand shops, you are pretty much certain to find what you’re looking for in Paris!

Step back in time by stepping over the threshold of Belle Lurette - Trolls et Puces. This atypical flea market is housed in a former factory that now provides space for various antique dealers and is a magnet for passionate collectors and bargain hunters. Here you can find all manner of vintage and second-hand items.

We also recommend another shop close by; Alasinglinglin, which is also well worth a visit while you’re in the vicinity! In a smaller space can be found a fabulous hoard of fine quality vintage furniture at prices to suit all budgets. There’s also plenty of funky knick-knacks and fascinating trinkets to look through.
