Paris is a city steeped in culture, with a wealth of fine exhibitions on offer throughout the year. The beginning of 2015 is no exception; the year opens and then continues with a wide selection of Parisian exhibitions and events from which to make your choice. To make things a little easier for you, we at the BW Quartier Latin Panthéon would like to present a brief overview, bringing together some of our personal favourites and some others that we feel are definitely deserving of your attention. You can be sure that all are of the highest quality.
Six superb exhibitions in Paris you should not miss :
Auguste Rodin and Gustave Moreau museum
The first phase of the extensive renovations at the Hôtel Biron, the last home of the great sculptor Auguste Rodin, have been completed, but other work is still ongoing. Nonetheless, this superb Rodin Museum began to welcome the public again in September to a limited degree, in the garden and the exhibition area, where masterpieces such as The Kiss and The Thinker can be viewed.
Open in January is the Gustave Moreau Museum. The exclusive domain of the 19th century French Symbolist painter is located in the family mansion, and boasts over 5,000 examples of his work, including his famous studies of biblical and mythological figures. The artist’s commentaries on his work are available throughout.
Grand Palais and Paris Museum of Modern Art, unmissable places of culture
A retrospective dedicated to the great 17th century Spanish painter Diego Velázquez can be seen at the Grand Palais from March 25th to July 13th. The exhibition places this genius of the Spanish Golden Age firmly in the context of his time, and shines a light on how his work inspired the later realist and impressionist painters.
Shadows is the evocative name given to an exhibition of the challenging work of the American Pop Art pioneer Andy Warhol. The Paris Museum of Modern Art is the venue from October 2nd for this special event which will showcase the artist’s largest art installation, created in 1979 and presented for the first time outside of the United States. This lesser-known masterpiece encompasses many of the themes for which the iconoclastic creator is famed.
Rich film heritage of the French Cinematheque
The monumentally talented American film director Martin Scorsese is to be honoured at the French Cinematheque from October 7th. This exhibition will look at the life and work of the creator who gave us such classics as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and The Departed, highlighting his feature films, documentaries and his relationship with some of the world’s finest actors, including Robert DeNiro and Leonardo DiCaprio.
New Philharmonie of Paris
Following its great success in London, the David Bowie Is…exhibition comes to Paris from March 3rd for the opening of the Philharmonie de Paris. With archive material and artefacts drawn chiefly from the musical chameleon’s archives, including documents, recordings, photographs, video, costumes, set components, handwritten pages, drawings and instruments, this is a unique visual and audio experience casting a revealing spotlight on a creative individual who defies categorisation.
